Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema was a famous Dutch Romanticist artist who spent much of his life in 19th century Britain. Tadema's paintings were famous for being set in Antiquity, and he also painted portraits, landscapes and watercolors, and made some etchings. Alma Tadema regularly incorporated flowers, textures and hard reflecting substances, like metals, pottery into his works. Alma Tadema was also best known for realistic marble effects in many of his paintings. After a career spanning 60 years, Tadema had produced over 400 known paintings and also designed some musical instruments as well.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was one of the most successful painters of the Victorian era, consistently producing distinctive, elaborate paintings of beautiful people in classical settings, which his fans loved. They specifically enjoyed his detailed reconstructions of ancient Rome, with languid men and women posed against white marble in dazzling sunlight. The exotic and glamorous lives depicted in his paintings have made them popular choices ever since as handmade reproductions.

Sadly for Alma Tadema, towards the end of his career new art styles began to pop up around Europe which immediately took away from his own popularity and these developments left him unhappy and frustrated. His perfectionist attitude was deeply affected by this change of tastes, which he strongly resented.

The likes of Matisse, Gauguin and Picasso rose in fame and a bitter Alma Tadema strongly opposed their works as a result. Nowadays he would be pleased to see that his name lives on strongly and certainly has not died off completely.
