Female artists are rarely mentioned in the same breath as the most famous artists such as Michelangelo, Van Gogh or Warhol. Instead, many have earned nominal credibility on the outskirts of the art scene. As society has changed, so has the role of female artists, who now have a great relevancy and prominency. This article will outline which women are among these influential famous female artists, and will include those of different art movements and styles. The term female artists for the purposes of this article concerns female painters - for musicians, sculptors, photographers and more please use alternative resources.

Georgia O'Keeffe was a key figure in American art from the 1920s and received great acceptance in the art world for pushing the boundaries of American modern art. Her paintings of flowers, and other natural subjects were what O'Keeffe was best known for, and along with Mary Cassatt is perhaps the most famous American female painter.

Mary Cassatt was an American painter who spent much of her life in France where she became involved in the impressionist art movement, which was rare for a female painter of the time. Cassatt's position helped her to portray women's position in society accurately, and helped to give women prominence in paintings for once.

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter. She painted using vibrant colors in a style that was influenced by indigenous cultures of Mexico and European influences including Realism, Symbolism, and Surrealism. Many of her works are self-portraits that symbolically articulate her own pain and sexuality. Kahlo was married to Mexican muralist Diego Rivera.
