Frederic Edwin Church

Frederic Edwin Church was an American landscape painter who left a great legacy through his participation in the Hudson River School, which was a group of like minded artists who combined styles of realism and romanticism with the natural North American landscape. He starred alongside the likes of Bierstadt, Moran and Cole in contributing a key element of 19th century American painting. Indeed, Thomas Cole was his major influence and inspiration early on in his career before he gained the experience and confidence to incorporate his own ideas and beliefs into his paintings. Church combined his locations with use of light, sunsets and colours to create a career with extraordinary achievement which many still choose to enjoy even today, by buying reproductions of his many high quality works. See below for the best Church paintings which we offer as handmade reproductions, delivered to your door with free international shipping. Church painted The Heart of the Andes in 1859 which is now held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It held the record at one time as being the most expensive painting sold by a living American artist, when it was sold for $10,000. Church had earlier spent time travelling around South America in order to extend his experience and knowledge of both his life and his painting techniques. Church would later travel around Europe and the Middle East with his wife which provided him with further inspiration for future works on his return.

A great example of the combining influences of Cole's Hudson River School and Church's travels throughout his life were shown by his purchase of land graced with fantastic views of the Hudson River and the Catskills. He later ordered a Persian-inspired build upon this land and finally found a perfect viewing spot for his later years.

Frederic Edwin Church exhibited his paintings at the exhibitions of the National Academy of Design, the American Art Union, and at the Boston Art Club. He joined the likes of famous American artists like Thomas Cole, Asher Brown Durand, John F. Kensett, and Jasper F. Cropsey. It was here that the art press began to accept and enjoy landscape painting, and those involved here were termed the Hudson River School artists.
