Among the best early paintings by Courbet as he began to establish himself were several self-portraits, showing himself in different poses and moods such as Self-Portrait with Black Dog, Desperate Man, Lovers in the Countryside, The Wounded Man and The Cellist. The artist then travelled to Flemish regions for a short period where he mixed with, and studied previous works by historic and current artists. Rembrandt and Hals helped influence his mindset on what his paintings should depict.

Stone-Breakers, the Peasants of Flagey, and A Burial at Ornans records the funeral of Courbet's grand uncle and is perhaps one of his best and most complex works. It immediately proved popular and brought respect to his career. It matched his own strong desire to capture life as it was, without artistic adaption, but just realism and character.

After establishing a strong presence in French art by the 1870s, Courbet established the "Federation of Artists" (Fédération des artistes) which encouraged creativity and innovation above all, and sought to avoid any restrictions on this. His stature helped him to attract well known members to the group, such as Andre Gill, Honore Daumier, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Eugene Pottier, Jules Dalou, and Edouard Manet.
