Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas was a famous French artist from the 19th and 20th century who is believed to have been one of the original members of the impressionist movement alongside the likes of Claude Monet. Degas paintings are what he is best known for, but he also was involved in sculpture, printmaking and drawing. Edgar Degas paintings also had a similar style to what became known as realism and preferred this label, joining artists such as Gustave Caillebotte. Degas is best remembered for his series of paintings capturing dancers as well as female nudes and some based at a racecourse. Edgar Degas was an artist who respected and studied art history and the famous masters who had gone before him. Two of those that he admired most were Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and Eugène Delacroix. As with many of the impressionists and expressionists that followed, Degas also had a great personal love of Japanese art, such as traditional wooden blocks prints. Whilst very much part of the original French impressionist movement, Degas preferred to keep himself slightly separated and would distance himself from this movement, preferring to be linked to the realism movement.

Degas' series of paintings of dancers were memorable for their imaginative viewpoints and angles, plus the ways in which he would differentiate the lives of men and women of the time in each of these works. Much of the reason for this large number of paintings depicting Degas was simply that he could sell them easily, and finance has always been an issue for artists, then and now. Sometimes even famous artists have had to produce what was demanded rather than what they wanted to paint in order to pay the bills, but in this case most believe that Edgar Degas did have plenty of enjoyment in his subjects.

La Toilette (Woman Combing Her Hair) is an example of how Degas also went into nude paintings, normally of women, and found this to be another interesting challenge and opportunity for his career. After starting initially with sketches, he would move into full colour creations in oil on canvas. There are now many other well known works that Degas created featuring nude subjects.

As he grew in age, experience and confidence, Degas's paintings were to dabble more and more with a touch of abstraction as he sought to push his skills further and bring variety to his portfolio.
