Gauguin remains one of the most important French impressionist artists and his work is popular across the world.
Gauguin's long relationship with Van Gogh was continuously up and down, as typical between two creative artists. Paul Gauguin had shown a clear early interest in Impressionism, and the two shared bouts of depression and suicidal tendencies. Gauguin and Van Gogh spent nine weeks together, painting in the Vicnent's Yellow House in Arles. Gauguin became increasingly disillusioned with Impressionism, and the two regularly argued about many different subjects.
Paul Gauguin was the first artist to achieve mainstream success within the art movement of Primitivism. It came around the 19th century when he was approaching his peak, and the typical elements of this art movement would include exaggerated body proportions, animal totems, geometric designs and clear contrasts and Gauguin loved this style of work. This style was more typically associated with artists from Africa, Micronesia, and Native Americans but it was Gauguin who brought it into Europe and achieved popularity with it as tastes started to become more varied with an interest in the exotic, as further demonstrated by other's artists' dabbling with the techniques of Japanese art at about the same time. Gauguin is believed to enjoy most the relative simplicity and abstract style of this movement as opposed to the intricate, realist style of European art of the time.
Paul Gauguin will also be remembered as a talented artist who left a great legacy not just with his fine works from a long career, but also the influence that he left on key artists that followed in future generations. This success of Gauguin paintings is further confirmed by the fact that many art followers today still choose to buy reproductions of his paintings, which you can do on this site too.
Gauguin's original and exotic art style was influential on modern artists that followed such as Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, André Derain plus art movements such as specifically Fauvism, Cubism and Orphism. His brave achievements encouraged others in Europe to attempt new styles and break away from the norm.
