Juan Gris is a Spanish painter and sculptor who created most of his paintings in France, where he spent the majority of his life. Gris paintings came around the early 20th century and he was an important part of the rise of Cubism, producing many of it's most famous paintings alongside it's figurehead Pablo Picasso. During his career, Gris was also close to Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger and particularly Amedeo Modigliani. Famous Gris paintings included Glass of Beer and Playing Cards, Violin and Checkerboard, The Guitar, Still Life with Fruit Dish and Mandolin and Harlequin with Guitar. As well as his paintings, Gris also produced ballet sets and costumes for Sergei Diaghilev and the famous Ballets Russes as well as sculptures to high regard too.

Juan Gris progressed during his relatively short career from Cubism to Synthetic Cubism. Picasso and Braque were famous for their monochromatic Cubist works but Gris preferred to use brighter harmonious colors in his paintings which portrayed a braver, more original artist possibly influenced by the works of close friend Henri Matisse, who was well known for this.

Sadly Gris only lived to the age of 40, but will always be remembered alongside Braque and Picasso as a key Cubist artist and his his later theories have also been well remembered.
