Jacques Louis David and Napoleon had a close relationship for many years during the artist's height of fame. Napoleon respected the quality of David's work and encouraged him to join him on a visit to Egypt, but that was declined due to the artist's age. By this stage, Jacques Louis David had enough confidence in his understudies whom he had taught well in order to send them instead in his place, even on such a prestigious trip. Jacques Louis David was to become the first lead artist of the republic upon the success of his subject in 1804. His official title was official court painter of that regime. The Napoleon related paintings that he completed during his career included Napoleon at the Saint-Bernard Pass and The Coronation of Napoleon, each of which included the leader's typically incessant alterations and interference which Jacques Louis David accepted only because of his subject's status.
Jacques Louis David's brush with the political forces in France eventually proved his downfall as he was imprisoned. At that point he was known to regret some of his previous actions and perhaps wish he had chosen a different path alongside his art. At the same time his pupils went from strength to strength, achieving awards across Europe.
Alongside Napoleon, David also painted many other famous portrait paintings including Madame and Monsieur Seriziat, Marguerite-Charlotte David, The Comtesse Vilain XIIII and Her Daughter and Abbe Sieyes.
