Tamara de Lempicka

Tamara de Lempicka is a famous Polish female Art Deco painter who matched high quality portraits with a glamorous social profile. Lempicka famous lifestyle of extravagance and entertainment combined with her art to create a Polish celebrity that challenged the norms of early 20th century society. Lempicka's lifestyle and non-conformist behaviour helped to grow her friendships with the likes of Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, and André Gide who also respected her art to an equivalent degree. She also spent a lot of time in the company of key writers at the time as she looked to expand her knowledge and experience in the aspiration of developing her paintings further. When Lempicka passed away, her early Art Deco paintings had regained popularity with high price purchases and displays at high end galleries becoming common again. Stage play inspired by the life of Lempicka ("Tamara") ran first in Toronto, then in Los Angeles to great success.

Lempicka Prints

De Lempicka worked hard and played hard, even through the depression of the 1930s which seemed to avoid her own life style and career progression. At this time Lempicka painted King Alfonso XIII of Spain and Queen Elizabeth of Greece. Also around this time famous museums and galleries began to collect and display Lempicka paintings as her worth continued to grow. Whilst artists commonly attract comments and views of their eccentric private lives, Lempicka seemed to take things a little further, particularly considering the role of women in society at the time of her art career, and the confidence with which she challenged different social obstacles at the same time, be it about her religion, her sex or her art techniques. De Lempicka went onto paint her child Kizette repeatedly, leaving a striking portrait series: Kizette in Pink, 1926; Kizette on the Balcony, 1927; Kizette Sleeping, 1934; Portrait of Baroness Kizette, 1954-5, etc. In other paintings, the women depicted tend to resemble Kizette.

In keeping with Lempicka's challenge of social norms, she pursued a social life of extremes, be it her bisexuality or her socialite behaviour. She often used formal and narrative elements in her portraits and nude studies to produce overpowering effects of desire and seduction. Lempicka's truly artistic personality helped her to naturally become friends with many key artists who respected her ability as a painter and as a non-conformist.
