Amedeo Modigliani
Amedeo Modigliani was a famous figurative artist, Italian by birth but predominantly French by residence. His portraits were often nude but his paintings were more varied than this simplified classification. Modigliani struggled somewhat in his own social life, as is the case with many famous artists and painters. Popular paintings by Modigliani included Madame Pompadour and Jeanne Hébuterne in Red Shawl. His best works came at the beginning of the 20th century and others included Portrait of Maude Abrantes, Portrait of Jaques and Berthe Lipchitz, Seated Nude, Reclining Nude, Gypsy Woman with Baby, Woman with Red Hair, Dedie Hayden, Self-Portrait and Red Nude. Amedeo Modigliani's early paintings were influenced by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, but around 1907 he became fascinated by the paintings of Paul Cézanne. Modigliani went onto develop his own unique style which remains personal and innovative to this day.

Amedeo Modigliani was also a famed sculptor. His sculpures included Head (1911) which held great influence from Cambodian art in this particular sculpture. Known as Modì, which translates as 'cursed' (maudit), by many Parisians, but as Dedo to his family and friends, Modigliani was a handsome man, and attracted much female attention. He is also yet another Jewish artist who achieved great success.
Russian sculptor Chana Orloff introduced Modigliani to 19-year-old art student Jeanne Hébuterne who had posed for Tsuguharu Foujita. Her conservative bourgeois background meant Hébuterne became renounced by her devout Roman Catholic family for her liaison with the painter, whom they saw as little more than a debauched derelict, and, worse yet, a Jew. Despite her family's objections, soon they were living together, and although Hébuterne was the current love of his life, their public scenes became more renowned than Modigliani's individual drunken exhibitions.
See below a list of many of Modigliani's best oil paintings from his distinguished career which sadly was ended prematurely by the same passion and energy which drove his work.
