Rembrandt's greatest creative triumphs are exemplified especially in his portraits of his contemporaries, self-portraits and illustrations of scenes from the Bible. His self-portraits form a unique and intimate biography, in which the artist surveyed himself without vanity and with the utmost sincerity.
It is believed that Rembrandt created 300 paintings during his famous career. Rembrandt's prints, traditionally all called etchings, although many are produced in whole or part by engraving and sometimes drypoint, have a much more stable total of slightly under 300. Many believe Rembrandt made many more drawings in his lifetime than 2,000, but those extant are more rare than presumed.
