The word Renaissance has also been used to describe other historical and cultural movements, such as the Carolingian Renaissance and the Renaissance of the 12th century. Scholars have noted several features unique to Florentine cultural life which may have caused such a cultural movement. Many have emphasized the role played by the Medici, a banking family and later ducal ruling house, in patronizing and stimulating the arts. Lorenzo de' Medici was the catalyst for an enormous amount of arts patronage, encouraging his countryman to commission works from Florence's leading artists, including Leonardo da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, and Michelangelo Buonarroti.

Michelangelo was a 15th century Italian Renaissance oil painter, sculptor, architect, poet and engineer. Michelangelo is seen as a key Renaissance figure, along with fellow Italian Leonardo da Vinci due to their exceptional standards in different fields of art.

Raphael was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance, celebrated for the perfection and grace of his paintings and drawings. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period. Raphael has long been considered good enough to be placed in the same respect and regard as the afore mentioned artists, and perhaps he may have even surpassed them, has his life not ended so early.

Leonardo Da Vinci was an Italian High Renaissance artist who painted classic works such as Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, The Vitruvian Man in the 15th & 16th century. He was famous in many different fields throughout the Renaissance era, and played an important role within it.

Caravaggio was an Italian artist active in Rome, Naples, Malta and Sicily between 1593 and 1610. Caravaggio was considered the first great representative of the Baroque school of painting.

Giotto came at such an early stage that he is categorised as a Early-Renaissance artist, which famous artists such as Da Vinci and Michelangelo would profit from centuries later. Whilst lesser known than those two, Giotto's existence as the first major artist of the Renaissance makes his career very important and his paintings and frecos well worthy of study.

Peter Paul Rubens was a 17th century Flemish Baroque painter, born in Germany. Rubens' Baroque style used movement, color, and sensuality. Rubens is famous for oil paintings of altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological subjects.

Jan van Eyck (also known as Johannes de Eyck) was a famous Flemish artist prominent in Bruges and respected as one of the best Northern European painters of the 15th century.

Rembrandt was a famous Dutch painterwho has retained his popularity many centuries later. Rembrandt is considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history and the most important in Dutch history. Rembrandt's contributions to art came in the Dutch Golden Age.
