John Singer Sargent
John Singer Sargent is an American artist from the 19th & 20th century who spent much time travelling with his family, which helped develop his art style as he was exposed to many exciting influences. All Singer Sargent's best paintings are available to order online here, in any size required.
Whilst the art world was ever changing into modern contemporary art styles, Sargent practiced his own form of Realism, which made brilliant references to Velázquez, Van Dyck, and Gainsborough. Sargent spent much of his time mixing with the likes of Dennis Miller Bunker, James Carroll Beckwith, Edwin Austin Abbey (who also worked on the Boston Public Library murals), Francis David Millet, Wilfrid de Glehn, Jane Emmet de Glehn and Claude Monet, whom Sargent painted.

John Singer Sargent was a famous American painter, and a leading portrait painter of his era. During his career, he created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. Sargent spent time in his life with Degas, Rodin, Monet, and Whistler. Sargent’s early enthusiasm was for landscapes, not portraiture, as evidenced by his voluminous sketches full of mountains, seascapes, and buildings.
Singer Sargent's excellent manners, perfect French, and great skill made him a standout among the newer portraitists, and his fame quickly spread. Singer Sargent confidently set high prices and even turned down unsatisfactory sitters.
Sargent's best portraits reveal the individuality and personality of the sitters; his most ardent admirers think he is matched in this only by Velázquez, who was one of Sargent's great influences. The Spanish master's spell is apparent in Sargent's The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit, 1882, a haunting interior which echoes Velázquez's Las Meninas.
