Toulouse-Lautrec is seen by many, along with Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin, as one of the greatest painters of the Post-Impressionist period. Toulouse-Lautrec was well known as a Painter, Printmaker, draftsman, illustrator. His paintings fell into the art movements of Post-Impressionism and Art Nouveau. He is respected as a truly creative and innovative artist and so these classifications are only a guide. Toulouse-Lautrec became an important Post-Impressionist painter, art nouveau illustrator, and lithographer; and recorded in his works many details of the late-19th-century bohemian lifestyle in Paris. When the nearby Moulin Rouge cabaret opened its doors, Toulouse-Lautrec was commissioned to produce a series of posters. Thereafter, the cabaret reserved a seat for him, and displayed his paintings. The Moulin Rouge series is now what Toulouse-Lautrec is best known for, but to stop there would a shame as his career was illustrious. Sadly his health problems cut short what was a crucial contribution.
