Jan van Eyck
Jan van Eyck (also known as Johannes de Eyck) was a famous Flemish artist prominent in Bruges and respected as one of the best Northern European painters of the 15th century. The gallery below features many Van Eyck paintings ready to buy as reproductions from our store, made to whatever size you require. Underneath the gallery is a fuller list of famous Van Eyck paintings, any of which we can provide for you. Jan was known to have been influenced by his brother Hubert van Eyck. Jan Van Eyck was named "the leading painter" of his day in some quarters, but there is a lack of evidence still available as to which paintings he created, and what others in the art world thought about them.

Jan van Eyck normally signed and dated his paintings on their frames which was relatively unusual at the time as the frames were considered an element of the work itself. Arnolfini Portrait (held in the National Gallery, London) is one example of this, and is a painting which has been analysed and discussed countless time over recent centuries. Historians for various reasons have spent a lot of time looking through the career of Van Eyck, more so than most other artists. This reflects the importance of this artist towards several developments in the world of art since.
The success of Van Eyck's paintings in the modern age is shown in the prestigious level of the museums and galleries which now host his works. Due to the few that have been actually attributed to Van Eyck, his paintings have great demand per each piece, making their ownership a great prize for the museums that hold them. The museums that host Van Eyck's paintings on permanent displays include National Gallery of Art, Washington, Kunsthistoriches Museum, Vienna, Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Groeningemuseum, Bruges, Thyssen collection, Madrid, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, National Gallery, London, Saint Bavo Cathedral, Ghent and Galleria Sabauda, Turin.
Around 25 paintings in total have been attributed to Jan Van Eyck. He produced many as private commissions including perhaps his best known work - Ghent Altarpiece which was painted for Jodocus Vijdts and his wife Elisabeth Borluut. It was painted between 1426 and then completed by 1432. Van Eyck got respect for his painting which went against normal Italian renaissance style to accurately depict natural themes instead. His style was rare in that it differed from the norm of the time but still gained respect during his lifetime. Most artists that push against the mainstream only gain success years later after trends have moved on.
