A Wheatfield with Cypresses was painted by Van Gogh in September 1889. At the time Vincent was a patient in the St-Rémy mental asylum, near Arles in France. There were three very similar versions of this painting that he made during the series. Most believe that these were created whilst sat directly in the area at the time.
The series of works are spread around in the galleries of Europe and North America, with one in the British National Gallery. Two of the three in this series were closeups of the cypress trees to portray their colour and contrast to the sun behind them, whilst one wider version is perhaps the best known of the three.
